Through teaching French and Spanish at Tollgate, our children will develop skills for life in language learning, which will equip our children with the foundation skills to build upon in secondary school. This will enable them to live, work, and compete in a diverse world and international workplace.

In order to do this, Tollgate children will:

• have a love of languages
• know why we need to be able to communicate in different languages
• develop spoken French and Spanish
• understand some written French and Spanish
• write words, phrases and simple sentences in French and Spanish
• understand simple grammar
• correctly pronounce and understand key words
• converse in basic French and Spanish, with increasing fluency and confidence

Opportunities are taken to develop the children’s cultural awareness and to foster curiosity, whilst deepening their understanding of the world beyond Eastbourne. French and Spanish are the most commonly taught languages at our local secondary schools.
