    Intent Statement

We aim for all children at Tollgate to become resilient and successful mathematicians; maths provides a foundation for the understanding of our world including economics, engineering, technology and science.

In order to do this, Tollgate children will:

    • Be Fluent in Maths: We expect all children to develop both conceptual and procedural fluency, using a mastery approach. With the right teaching, support and growth mind-set, everyone can make progress.
    • Use Reasoning: Our children will reason mathematically, giving them a confidence and appreciation of the subject and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity within it. They will move through the stages of reasoning (describe, justify, convince, and prove by working systematically, while developing and using a rich mathematical language.
    • Use Problem-Solving: children will have sufficient understanding to draw on existing knowledge to solve, monitor, reflect and communicate effectively. They will anticipate practical problems that might arise when working mathematically and think logically to try different approaches when finding solutions.
    • Enjoy maths so that they feel secure enough to think deeply, reason, problem-solve and apply their learning to real life situations, as well as appreciating maths for its own sake.
