  • PSHE and RSHE

Rooted in who we are, ready for who we’ll become – socially, emotionally and morally

At Tollgate, PSHE is not an add‑on: it is the heartbeat of our curriculum and central to our mission of nurturing confident, compassionate and resilient young people. We believe every child has the right to feel safe, valued, healthy and capable of shaping their own future. PSHE at Tollgate provides the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to thrive - not only during their time with us, but throughout their lives in a diverse, complex and changing world.

Our curriculum ensures children are equipped to understand themselves, form positive relationships, stay mentally and physically healthy, celebrate difference, and make well‑informed choices. It is a crucial driver of safeguarding, wellbeing and personal development.

We use Thrive to build emotional security, resilience and self‑regulation, ensuring that every child is known, supported and empowered.

Our Intent: What We Want for Every Tollgate Child

To be Healthy, Safe and Emotionally Secure

We teach children how to look after their physical health, mental wellbeing and emotional resilience. They learn how to recognise risks, stay safe - offline and online - and seek help when needed. PSHE plays an essential role in safeguarding healthy lifestyles and risk awareness.

To Understand and Value Themselves and Others

Our pupils explore identity, rights, responsibilities and the protected characteristics: we emphasise diversity, respect and inclusivity. We want children to recognise their own worth, understand difference and champion fairness and equality.

To Be Articulate, Empathetic and Reflective

PSHE at Tollgate builds thoughtful communicators who can listen, express themselves confidently, work collaboratively and show empathy - we actively foster articulate collaboration and emotional intelligence.

To Develop Strong Values and Make Informed Choices

Our curriculum teaches pupils to consider moral, social and cultural issues with maturity. We nurture responsible citizens who demonstrate integrity, respect, courage and fairness in both their actions and relationships.

    To Build Positive, Healthy Relationships

Children learn what healthy friendships look like, how to set and respect personal boundaries, and how to navigate conflict safely. This reflects the statutory expectations for Relationships Education and the emphasis on consent, boundaries and personal safety.

    To Become Active, Responsible Citizens

Pupils are encouraged to engage with their community, understand British Values, and take part in opportunities that help them contribute positively to society. We place citizenship, service and participation at the core of our PSHE curriculum.

To Be Ready for the Future

Our PSHE curriculum prepares children for the challenges and opportunities they will face - emotionally, socially, academically and economically. Content is age‑appropriate, well‑sequenced and responsive to pupils’ needs.
